World Environment Day 2023 was celebrated by Doctors On Call Organization on June 5, 2023. The theme for this year's event is "Beat Plastic Pollution." This year marks the 50th anniversary of World Environment Day, and the Doctors On Call organization is calling on everyone to take action to reduce plastic pollution. Plastic pollution is a global problem that is harming our planet and its wildlife. Every year, millions of tons of plastic waste end up in our oceans, where it can take hundreds of years to break down. This waste can entangle and kill marine life, and it can also pollute our food and water supplies. There are many things that we can do to reduce plastic pollution. We can recycle more, refuse single-use plastics, and choose products made from recycled materials. We can also support businesses that are working to reduce their plastic footprint. It affects an estimated 500 million people worldwide, including 1 in 10 girls in the United States, 6 in 10 girls in Nigeria, and 4 in 10 girls in India. Period poverty can have a devastating impact on people's lives. It can lead to school absenteeism, missed work, and even health problems. It can also contribute to stigma and shame around menstruation. There are many reasons why people experience period poverty. Some people live in poverty and cannot afford menstrual products. Others live in rural areas or conflict zones where access to menstrual products is limited. Still others face cultural or religious barriers that prevent them from using menstrual products. There are a number of things that can be done to address period poverty. One is to make menstrual products more affordable. Another is to provide education about menstruation and menstrual hygiene. We can also work to break down the stigma around menstruation. Period poverty is a complex issue, but it is one that we can solve.
